International Womens Day What is international womens day you ask? International Women's Day (March is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality. IWD has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organization specific. "The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights." So make International Women's Day your day and do what you can to truly make a positive difference for women. Question: Do you think women, Black women in general are paid fairly? Although 66% of workers surveyed say they are paid fairly in their current roles, a closer look at the data reveals a more complex situation. While 30% of men strongly agree they are paid fairly, only 15% of women say the same. Similarly, 18% of Black workers surveyed strongly disagree they are paid fairly at their jobs, compared to 6% of white workers. Together, these differences highlight the ongoing role that race and gender play in fair pay—and the importance of ensuring equal access to salary data. Question: Do you think gender equality is important in the workplace? Progressive employers understand why gender equality in the workplace is key In many of today's economies, women are more educated and employed than ever. In part, we can thank changing social mindsets along with the development of more progressive workplace cultures where a strong focus on diversity and inclusion is evident. Over 87% of companies are highly committed to gender equality - a huge increase from 56% in 2012. A commitment to equality often comes from senior leaders, management and male employees. Question: Do you think its important for women, again mainly Black women to take control of their career success? Taking control of career success Women themselves are more proactively forging their own career paths and taking control over their professional successes. Women are more likely to proactively ask for new career challenges and pay rises. There is also a rise in women-owned businesses and working mothers. Most importantly – women report being happier at work than men. What if anything are you doing to take control of your career success? Going to school, starting a business, asking for more experience at work? Despite leaps in progress, women are still under-represented in the workplace, particularly women of color, women with disabilities and LGBT women. In your current workplace or your last workplace, do you feel there were enough Black women in leadership positions? Question: Do you feel that any workplace that fails to harness the creativity and energy of women can be at a huge disadvantage in the modern world? Collectively, we can all work to help forge women's equality - sooner and faster. Thankfully gains are being made, but there is still a great deal to achieve on many fronts. Therefore, International Women's Day sees a number of exciting and important MISSIONS aimed at: raising greater awareness about issues impacting women's equality taking a stance to call out inequality while working to forge positive action highlighting and applauding where important gains are being made celebrating women's achievements and accomplishments
